Reflection
One of the skills that I had coming into my LINK that helped me was my interest within the music industry. I have always loved music and I feel that having that love for the music and the industry made my internship really enjoyable. Whenever I was given a task by my mentor, I was very excited to start working on it and to gain as much knowledge as I could. I have found that when I am doing assignments that have to do with a subject that I'm interested in, I tend to spend a lot more time and effort completing it. An example of this would be my final project while I was completing my jazz camp project. While I was working on the project, I noticed that I had a lot of motivation and interest in the project itself because I knew that the work was going to help the staff at SBG. This happened multiple times throughout my internship with the assignments that I was doing and my interest in them. Another skill that I thought was really beneficial to have was my organization skills. After I had completed my first few assignments, I noticed that my organization was beneficial while creating spreadsheets and google docs. I found that while working in a professional environment, it's very important to organize your research so that it is easy to understand and looks professional. By the end of my internship my mentor said that all of my work that I had completed was very easy to navigate through and understand, which was a good thing for me to hear because it taught me that organization on assignments is an important skill to have in the job world.
A skill that I developed during my internship was being independent. During my internship I lived alone at a friends house located just five minutes from SBG Productions office. This meant that I had to rely on myself to get to work on time as well as sustain my living situation. I felt like this gave me a great opportunity to improve my independence because it gave me a sense of responsibility and maturity. At first, I was a little nervous about how I was going to wake up on time every day and feed myself for three weeks. After I adjusted to the changes, I felt like I gained a lot of confidence and independence through relying just on myself and no one else. Another skill that I learned during my internship was adapting to a completely new environment in and outside the office. Living in Telluride is a much different environment than Durango just by the people that live there and the activities that they do. It was also interesting to work in a professional environment because it was so different from being at school. This was a really awesome experience because it gave me a taste of how it will be after graduating from high school.
One of the ways that I persevered through these challenges was keeping a positive attitude and being open minded towards some of the changes during LINK. By having a positive mindset, I was able to look for more exciting opportunities that could come from my internship and be happy about completing those tasks. I feel that this allowed me to have a really engaging and exhilarating internship because when I would wake up every morning, I'd feel excited to go to work everyday and to gain as much information as I could about marketing and advertising. Being open minded also played a huge role in me attending my internship as well. Throughout my experience, Patrick Shehan gave me a lot of tasks to complete throughout the day which were really interesting and engaging. Some of the assignments that he gave me were tedious at times but I knew that it was information that was important to them as a business as well as my learning experience. By being open minded towards the work that I was doing, I was able to complete professional work even if it was tedious.
With every business, there is always work that needs to be done which the staff can't do because of lack of time or other more important work that needs to meet a deadline. I think that my presence in the SBG office gave the staff the opportunity to assign me tasks that they didn't have time to complete. I also think that the tasks that I was given were important to the operation of the festivals such as sponsorships, blog updates, and my project. By having an open mind and being positive about the tasks I was completing, I was able to create professional documents and spreadsheets that were easy to understand and navigate through, making it easier for the staff to evaluate my work. Any of the staff members at SBG, especially Patrick Shehan, would be a great mentor for students to learn from in the future if they are interested in marketing and advertising within the music industry. At the start of my internship, I had very little knowledge about the work that I was doing and by the end I understood a lot of the purpose behind the work I was doing. I think that this shows signs of a great mentor who understands the importance of a LINK Internship because it allows students to experiment with career paths. The entire staff is also really supportive and easy to be around which provides a really fun work environment.
This internship has prepared me for college and career paths in numerous ways through the experience of living alone in Telluride as well as going to work everyday for eight hours a day. It really gave me an understanding what being completely independent is like and only having myself to rely on to do the work I needed to complete without having anyone to tell me to do it. Throughout the internship I noticed a resemblance in the way life will be while I am in college or working in a career I enjoy. I really think that this internship gave me a great opportunity to work in an environment I was interested in and to be able to work with people who are dedicated to their jobs. I don't think that I will go to a college to learn about marketing or advertising because there are other career fields that I am more interested in learning about such as fashion and other jobs within the music industry. However,I really enjoyed learning about those areas of the music business and my internship was a very worthwhile experience.
